A counter protest at Shipbuilders Park in Manitowoc last night made it clear where some residents stood after a white nationalist group protested last weekend.
Progressive Lakeshore people held the protest after the white nationalist group patriot front showed up over the weekend.
One protester, Luke, says he was disappointed to see them in town, but he wasn’t surprised.
He stated, “If they get into a community and you tolerate them, they wedge themselves further and further into that community until they become difficult to remove and confront.”
However, he said it did make him happy to see everyone who showed up yesterday.
“Every time I come here to one of these protests with Progressive Lakeshore People, it feels good,” he noted. “It feels like I’m not crazy, there’s other people who feel just as passionate about it as I do.”
A person running for Congress against Incumbent Glenn Grothman was also on hand.
Candidate Amanda Bell, who lives in Columbia County, explained why she made the long two-hour trek to Manitowoc County.
“We have to make sure that our love is greater than their hate,” she explained. “Because that’s the only that’s going to get out of the darkness is the light.”
Lakeshore Progressive People Organizer Jill Iverson says she was disturbed to see Patriot Front in both Manitowoc and Sheboygan, but she’s seen their signs in the city before.
“We had seen their stickers, they’re called, their fascist nazi propaganda, glued up on electric boxes and some other things around town,” she stated. “They have been coming to Manitowoc for a year and doing this.”
Why Patriot Front showed up in Manitowoc to protest on Sunday is still not known at this time.
