The City of Sheboygan has moved one step closer to beginning a major road construction project.
At Monday’s Public Works Committee meeting, the group approved a contract with LaLonde Contractors, Inc. to make street improvements to Erie Avenue later this year.
The contract is worth just over $1.5 million, and the project itself would run along Erie from North Taylor Drive to North 19th Street.
Work to be done during the construction project includes replacing damaged and failing pavement, new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and storm and sanitary sewer repairs.
Additional improvements would include a crosswalk near Edenbrook and the U.S. Army Reserve Center, with hopes of providing safer pedestrian access from the nearby residential neighborhood and the Taylor Heights Shopping Center.
Funds for this project have already been allocated thanks to the 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Plan, which includes just over $210,000 for sanitary sewer improvements.
With approval from the Public Works Commission, the construction contract will now move in front of Sheboygan’s Common Council.
If approved by the Council, work on Erie Avenue is expected to begin in June and be completed in the summer.
