A resolution banning immigration enforcement activities on Milwaukee property is over its first hurdle.
The Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee unanimously passed the resolution this week, which aims to keep immigration enforcement actions off of city property like parking lots, vacant lots, and more.
It is part of the council’s “ICE Out MKE” legislative package, an effort to keep Milwaukee prepared in case events that took place in Minnesota come to Brew City.
The full council still needs to approve the resolution later this month.
Additionally, Milwaukee Public Schools is going to cut hundreds of positions to deal with a massive budget deficit.
Board members voted this week to cut 263 jobs for the next school year, which is expected to save Wisconsin’s biggest school district roughly $30 million.
The move follows the discovery of MPS overshooting its budget from the previous school year by about $46 million.
Board members made the vote despite efforts by union leaders to reconsider.
