Governor Tony Evers has signed a bill into law that extends the statute of limitations for 2nd Degree Sexual Assault.
Act 90, which was co-authored by Senator Andre Jacque of New Franken, extended the amount of time an individual can be charged with the crime from 10 years to 20 years.
The passage of this bill was years in the making, as Sen. Jacque initially proposed the idea in 2019.
He had re-introduced the measure multiple times, but the furthest it had reached prior to now was the passing on a voice vote in the Senate in 2021.
Sen. Jacque tells SeehaferNews.com that the work was worth it because “For many, a delayed decision to report is the product of the very real and devastating physical and psychological effects of the crime. Making this change now will ensure more victims have the opportunity to report it to law enforcement in the future – we cannot hold back prosecutors who are ready and willing to work to achieve justice for more victims and hold perpetrators accountable.”
