The City of Sheboygan is moving forward with plans to acquire one of its treasured landmarks.
At yesterday’s (February 23rd) Public Works Committee meeting, the group discussed submitting an application to acquire the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard at no cost.
This comes after the lighthouse was listed as “being made available at no cost to eligible entities defined as federal agencies, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, or community development organizations.”
If fully approved, while free of cost for the acquisition of the lighthouse, the Public Works Committee is prepared to commit nearly $500,000 to the refurbishment of the structure.
Of the $495,857 estimated cost, the most significant portions will come from corrosion mitigation, rehabbing the tower’s connection to the concrete base, and concrete repairs.
The City is hoping to come into possession of the lighthouse in perpetuity for historic preservation and public benefit, while adding, “The intended use of the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse will remain consistent with its historic function and character. The structure will be preserved as a historic aid to navigation and an iconic landmark.”
This matter will now be further discussed and decided upon by the Sheboygan Common Council at a future date.
