The State of Wisconsin is teaming up with UW-Madison to do a study on nuclear energy opportunities in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) explains that nuclear energy generates safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity to power homes and businesses and remains an important part of Wisconsin’s existing energy.
The only operating nuclear power plant in Wisconsin is Point Beach, here in Manitowoc County, which accounts for 16% of the state’s energy generation portfolio.
The PSC says the overall goal of the siting study is to provide foundational information and a thorough evaluation of potential nuclear energy development opportunities in Wisconsin, to help guide future action.
The group also signed a memorandum of understanding with the UW-Madison Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics on January 5th to begin the study.
$2 million for the study came from the Wisconsin 2025-2027 biennial budget.
Governor Tony Evers also signed Wisconsin Act 11 last year, creating the Nuclear Power Summit Board to advance nuclear power and fusion technology and development.
