The deadline is approaching for veterans in the Global War on Terror to take a trip to a special memorial.
Chris Berkers of Mission of Honor tells Seehafernews.com that registration for veterans to join their group at the 9/11 Memorial must be submitted by Monday (February 16th).
Berkers also explained that Mission of Hope is an expansion of Old Glory Honor Flight.
“It’s the same dedicated people, it’s the same dedicated group doing the same work with our WWII to Vietnam Veterans,” he explained. “We just saw some opportunity where we could expand our services, and to do that, we just created a new organization called Missions of Honor.”
Berkers says the Honor Flight network has been great, but some parameters don’t allow the local group to work with veterans past the Vietnam War.
Their program, called Freedom of Liberty: A Mission of Healing Retreat, flies a group of local veterans who served during the Global War on Terrorism to the 9/11 Memorial for a three-night wellness retreat.
Berkers said the retreat shows veterans why they went overseas.
“The Global War on Terror, being the longest war America has ever been in, we lose sight of the why, we lose sight of the reason,” he described. “And if we bring them to the 9/11 Memorial, they meet people who were there that day. They see the devastation. They reconnect with the reason, the purpose of their service. And that we have found is very healing.”
Two retreats will happen in August and September.
