The Green Bay Police Department is dispelling a rumor that one of its police officers died on Super Bowl Sunday.
A post was made by the Facebook page known as Cheesehead Nation, which claimed that a 23-year-old officer had passed away following a DUI crash.
The post claims a Jeep was traveling at 99 miles per hour when it struck the unnamed officer who was volunteering to assist with preparations for the big game.
The Green Bay Police Department has responded, saying “this post is *false* and bears no truth.”
In fact, the officer depicted “does not, nor have they ever, worked for the Green Bay Police Department.”
The post has been shared throughout many NFL team fan pages, each claiming the officer was a part of their local police department.
Cheesehead Nation has a history of posting false articles designed to elicit a reaction, commonly referred to as “clickbait.”
The page also recently posted that NFL insider Adam Schefter had reported an extension for backup quarterback Malik Willis, another baseless claim.
The Green Bay Police Department also noted, “If a tragedy like this were true and were to happen in our community to a Green Bay Police Officer, please know that GBPD would properly communicate this information to the public as soon as reasonably possible.”
