One of two Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates stopped in Manitowoc two weeks ago to talk to the Manitowoc County Democratic Party.
Fourth District Appeals Judge Chris Taylor put it bluntly, saying that she’s running because it gives Wisconsin the opportunity, “To make sure that we have a pro-democracy majority on our state supreme court until at least 2030.”
Taylor then explained her background as a law school graduate, including her experience as a private attorney and the law and policy director for Planned Parenthood.
She also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly for nine years.
The judge then reemphasized her belief that there needs to be a strong state supreme court, while saying they need to continue protecting elections.
“Now we see efforts at the federal government trying to come in and take our voting information, our personal private information,” she stated. “We administer our elections here in Wisconsin, and we need to protect that function.”
Taylor then talked about her opponent, Judge Maria Lazar.
She stated that Lazar is supported by former Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge Michael Gableman and other out-of-state billionaires who tried to “buy the last election in Wisconsin.”
Taylor also said Lazar made a ruling about PFAS contamination.
“She recently wrote a decision saying polluters shouldn’t be held accountable when those toxic chemicals are released into our water,” she explained. “So, we also need to make sure that our resources are protected and that people’s health and lives are protected.”
Taylor finished her speech, saying attendees should speak to their neighbors about the issues and take questions.
They included topics like the FBI taking files, with a warrant, from a county in Georgia, to a challenge to Wisconsin’s Congressional maps.
Lazar says she’s running as an independent, impartial judge who will never be swayed by political decisions.
