With bitter cold temperatures hitting the lakeshore, Visit Sheboygan is warning of the dangers of Lake Michigan’s ice shelf.
First and foremost, they are urging Sheboyganites not to climb on the ice shelf.
As flowing lake water freezes, thin layers of ice form over hidden caverns, making the shelf extremely dangerous to walk on.
With the size of the shelf at this time and the temperature of the water below, falling inside one of these caverns leaves little chance for one to climb out.
On the risk the ice shelves pose, Visit Sheboygan said, “One wrong step could lead to falling into the icy water below with no way out. Stay safe and avoid the risk!”
While shared by Visit Sheboygan, these same threats persist along Lake Michigan’s entire coastline.
