The City of Manitowoc is again trying to ensure its residents are mindful of their salt use when clearing snow.
Residents can again get a free Salt Wise cup at City Hall, which, when filled, provides the right amount of salt for treating about 10 squares of sidewalk in most conditions.
Public Infrastructure Director Dan Koski explains that while people rely on salt for roads and sidewalks, the element degrades lakes, streams, and drinking water.
Manitowoc has started using a salt brine, calibrated salt trucks, and even tried beet juice as an alternative to salt because it won’t be as harmful to water and the environment.
The cups are also part of this week, which is Winter Salt Week in Wisconsin, which recognizes ways to reduce the amount of the element in fresh water.
To learn more about the harmful effects of salt, Koski encourages residents to go to Wisaltwise.com.
