The Wisconsin DATCP is warning residents about a scam involving tolls.
Residents have been receiving scam text messages claiming to come from a tolling agency collecting overdue fees.
The scammers claim they are with the Wisconsin DOT and that it’s a customer’s “final notice” to pay up with a link to pay their outstanding balances right away to avoid a penalty.
To avoid getting scammed, the DATCP says you should slow down and avoid rushing to click links or respond to texts.
Customers should also check with a tolling agency directly if they’ve recently traveled in a tolling area and are concerned they actually owe a toll fee.
If you know you don’t owe a fee, avoid engaging with the message to prevent the scam entirely.
