An Eastern Wisconsin legislator is accusing the opposition to a nuclear energy expansion bill of being dishonest.
Assembly Bill 472, which was introduced by Representative Shae Sortwell and fellow Republican Representatives Jeffrey Mursau, Bob Kreubich, and Barbra Dittrich, with co-sponsorship from Senators Jesse James and Dan Feyen, aims to create a nuclear energy generation tax credit, among other things, to expand the viability of nuclear energy in Wisconsin.
Through the legislative process, Rep. Sortwell noted that he worked with the governor’s office, legislative Democrats, utilities, nuclear scientists, Clean Wisconsin, and Americans for Prosperity (AFP).
However, the Gibson Representative says, “We have now seen multiple attempts where Clean Wisconsin and AFP make last-second efforts to kill the legislation, despite having ample time to work in good faith with Senator James and me.”
Several concessions were made in the bill, but Rep. Sortwell claims, “Despite making the exact changes that they requested, these interest groups moved the goalposts, showing dishonest opposition. I can understand Clean Wisconsin’s position because they only want expansion of wind and solar energy, but AFP lobbied aggressively against what they thought were energy monopolies earlier this session. Yet now they oppose energy source diversity.”
The bill is currently set to be reviewed by the Committee on Rules.
