It appears that Amazon will be coming to the City of Sheboygan in the future.
At their meeting Monday evening (January 19th), the Common Council approved a Purchase and Sale Contract for 58.1 acres of land, paving the way for Amazon to open a logistics facility.
The Class A logistics facility will be located in the nearly vacant South Pointe Enterprise Campus, located at the corner of Stahl Road and South Taylor Drive.
In total, the sale was approved for just over $2 million at a price of $35,000 per acre, a point many voiced their disapproval for, claiming it was a handout to Amazon, which is valued at well over $2 billion.
A major point of contention from residents regarding this decision by the Council is a fear that this land may turn into a data center in the future.
However, Amazon’s representative at the meeting, Jason Vangalis, responded to those concerns, saying, “This is not a data center. It has never been a data center. It will never be a data center.”
However, the logistics facility will only take up approximately 8% of the 58.1 acres, with room for more development.
Vangalis continued to say that this facility will be approximately 200,000 square feet and create 150 to 200 new jobs.
This contract was pushed through by the Common Council prior to the approval of their new proposed zoning code, yet again, another point Sheboyganites voiced their displeasure over at the meeting.
Despite this, the Council approved the contract by a 7-3 vote, with Alders Boorse, Close, and Parrella representing the no votes.
Amazon hopes to open the facility in the summer of 2027.
