Members of the Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) had a lot to talk about at a special day in Madison.
Eighty families and rural advocates gathered for the annual Farm and Rural Lobby Day, during which members spoke with legislators on issues related to dairy, agricultural concentration and rural development, immigration, healthcare, and conservation.
Much of the group’s discussion focused on two bills under consideration in the Wisconsin Legislature.
The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit is something the WFU supports, as it would create a 5% income tax for beginning farmers who buy assets from an established farmer and for established farmers who sell their assets.
However, members also expressed concern about another bill that would establish a regulatory system for companies by imposing unfair and arbitrary limitations on home-based baked goods businesses.
Wisconsin Farmers Union Government Relations Director Michelle Ramierz called the day inspiring, saying, “not only is this event an opportunity for Wisconsin legislators to meet the hardworking farmers of our state, but it also gives WFU members a chance to make change in their rural communities.”
The day began with Governor Tony Evers, who told the WFU that no matter what happens in Washington, he wants to fight for Wisconsin farmers, producers, and their families because agriculture is core not only to the economy but also to the state.
