A state committee chaired by an area state representative has been off to a busy start.
State Representative and Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Judiciary Ron Tusler explained that the committee heard five bills addressing various issues.
One bill that drew the most attention was Assembly Bill 258, which would end waiting periods for someone to apply for an occupational license if they need an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle.
The Legislative Reference Bureau explains that state law requires a 30-day waiting period if a person refuses to take a field sobriety test.
It would also end a law that requires a person to wait 45 days before applying for an occupational license after being convicted.
Lastly, the bill would add stricter penalties for people with three or more violations with an interlock ignition device, including tampering or removing the device without authorization.
The committee held another hearing to advance five bills to the Assembly floor, including a resolution to prohibit government entities from using DEI initiatives.
Another bill would prevent individuals from changing their gender on their birth certificate, while another would provide a civil cause of action for a minor injured by a gender transition procedure.
Tusler called the hearings busy and productive as the Wisconsin Legislature prepares for the end of the session in Spring 2026.
