Volunteers are needed to get a snapshot of the state of homelessness on the lakeshore next month.
The winter Point in Time (PIT) Count will be held on the night of January 28th into the morning of January 29th across Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Kewaunee, and Door Counties in an effort to identify, support, and aid individuals experiencing homelessness in our communities.
In order to ensure this event best gauges the state of homelessness in our area, volunteers are required, with the PIT Count organizers, the Lakeshore Housing Coalition, saying, “We encourage anyone interested in ending homelessness to join us, including community leaders, elected officials and campaigns, emergency and law enforcement services, students and staff from schools and universities, faith communities, and anyone interested in the wellbeing of people experiencing homelessness.”
From Sheboygan to Door County and everywhere in between, two volunteer slots are available, with the first running from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and the second running from 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
During a shift, a volunteer will be assigned to a public place such as a park, vehicle, or public shelter to engage with those experiencing homelessness.
The data gathered during the winter and summer PIT Counts play a pivotal role in how federal resources and funds are dispersed by the federal government.
