The Manitowoc Lincoln High School boys’ soccer team is making its impact on ending hunger in the community.
This fall, the team partnered with Manitowoc Cooperative Ministries and their weekly Free Community Meals program at First Presbyterian Church.
It comes after Lincoln Athletic Director Stan Dietrich and Superintendent Lee Thennes encourage varsity sports programs to deepen their community engagement.
Groups on the Lincoln soccer team took one 90-minute Wednesday evening volunteer shift during the six weeks between the end of the soccer season and Winter Break.
After getting a brief orientation, the players would jump into meal prep, serving, clean-up, and working together to ensure guests feel welcomed and supported.
By the break, 1,000 meals were distributed to local individuals and families in need.
Now, members of the Lincoln Boys’ Soccer team are planning on making the initiative more of an identity by branding the volunteer work at the Ships Sunk Hunger campaign.
The soccer groups will continue to give their time through at least the 2030-2031 school year.
The team has also mapped out a series of service opportunities to expand their impact starting next year.
More information about the initiative can be found on the Manitowoc Public School District’s Facebook page.
