A bill penned by Wisconsin’s Sixth District Congressman has passed the House of Representatives.
The Fair and Accountable IRS Reviews Act, introduced by Congressman Glenn Grothman, would provide more authority for an IRS employee’s supervisor to approve certain federal tax penalties, while also requiring any communication to be done in writing.
Rep. Grothman says Congress put the “safeguards” in place to make sure penalties are imposed fairly, consistently, and with appropriate oversight.
The Congressman stated, “A supervisors signature helps prevent the use of penalties as a pressure tactic, and creates a transparent record that benefits both taxpayers and the government in collections and appeals proceedings.”
The Glenbeluah Republican says previously, an IRS agent could propose a penalty without prior review, which weakened transparency in Congress.
He also said that Americans deserve a tax system that’s fair, predictable, and transparent.
The next step is for the bill to be introduced in the U.S. Senate before it can be signed into law by President Trump.
