The Kiel Fire Department recently responded to a call where a vehicle was on fire, and they are using the opportunity to inform the public about how quickly such instances can escalate.
Vehicle fires can start for various reasons, including mechanical or electrical issues, or even fluid leaks, and are incredibly dangerous.
Not only are the flames a big concern, but so is the smoke produced, which is extremely hot and highly toxic.
The Kiel Fire Department is warning drivers that if they ever smell smoke, an unusual odor, or see flames in their vehicle, they should “pull over safely, turn off the engine, and get everyone out immediately. Move a safe distance away of at least 100 feet and call 911. Do not try to retrieve items from the vehicle, and avoid opening the hood or trunk, as this can feed oxygen to the fire and cause it to grow rapidly.”
Regular maintenance can alleviate the risk of a vehicle fire, but it is important to know what to do in a worst-case scenario.
