No one was hurt after a gun was unintentionally fired inside an Appleton apartment.
The Appleton Police Department was called to a residence in the city on Sunday morning (November 16th) after receiving reports that a bullet was fired into their home.
Responding officers quickly learned that the bullet came from the neighboring residence through a shared interior wall.
A subsequent investigation revealed that an individual in the neighboring residence was conducting a basic firearm handling and safety demonstration two to others in preparation for a trip to a shooting range.
However, while giving the demonstration, the one in possession of the firearm failed to check if the gun was loaded, and accidentally discharged a live round through the shared interior wall.
While no one was struck in the affected apartment, four people were inside, including an infant, when the gun was fired.
Additionally, after the gun was fired, the shooter made no attempt to check the welfare of their neighbors.
Following their investigation, the shooter was taken into custody and has had charges of Endangering Safety by Use of a Dangerous Weapon referred to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office.
Appleton Police are warning the public of the dangers of improper firearms usage, stating, “This incident serves as an important reminder that unsafe weapon handling can have life-altering consequences. Firearms must be treated with utmost respect at all times, whether at home, at a range, or during instruction.”
