While some run from politics due to how contentious it has become, that divisiveness is exactly what drew Brad Smith to the 6th Congressional District race.
Smith, a native of Eastern Wisconsin currently living in Mequon, is running as a Democrat, but he tells SeehaferNews.com that he is definitely not an extremist.
“(We are a) dairy farming family. We still have our family farm up in Iola, Wisconsin. Deer hunt every November,” he explained. “I’m happy to support, Second Amendment rights, but I also don’t want kids to be killed in schools. I think that’s where I am a centrist. I think my core and the beliefs of the things I’m trying to accomplish and what I think we need together and we can agree upon are foundational things to every family.”
Smith had no intention of getting into a political career; however, he became more and more disillusioned by what politics has become, especially over the past couple of decades.
“It’s concerning and frustrating to me how much we’re being divided,” he said bluntly. “I don’t see the difference as much between the actual people on the ground that I know and I hunt with and I volunteer on my kids like a robotics team with. The divide is really between these ultra-wealthy and rich who are buying the government.”
Since announcing his candidacy to run for the seat currently held by longtime incumbent Glenn Grothman, Smith tells us his “hair has been on fire, but in a good way” as he has been hitting the pavement, and knocking on doors, and meeting people he hopes to represent in Washington.
While Smith has a lot of things he hopes to address, we asked him to narrow it down to three that he sees as his most important.
“I want to see health care that people can have as a right that doesn’t put you into bankruptcy if someone gets sick,” he revealed. Smith also pointed to “supporting companies that create and maintain local jobs here,” and “education and training for every path because it helps all of those things. It’s foundational.”
At the end of the day, running for a Congressional seat is a major undertaking, but there is one main reason why Smith is willing to put himself throw the ringer.
“I love this place. I’ve traveled wide and I’ve had the opportunity to go a lot of places. 19 countries in my lifetime, but this is the best place. That’s why I live here and I don’t want to live anywhere else.”
