Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) is getting residents ready for future winter storms and extremely cold weather.
With the start of Winter Weather Awareness Week being November 17th-21st, the agency explains that there were 96 cold-related deaths in the state during the 2024-2025 winter months, along with 400 hospitalizations.
Ice and snow on the roads also caused 31 deaths on Wisconsin roads last year, along with over 2,000 injuries.
If a really cold day happens, car owners are asked to make a kit that includes items like a flashlight and batteries, blankets, and a change of clothes in case you get into an accident and can’t get help immediately.
The Wisconsin DOT also reminds drivers that speed limits are based on clear, dry conditions, not when roads are snow or ice-covered.
WEM Administrator Greg Engle explains that being prepared, “doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take a little time and planning. That effort can make all the difference for you and your loved ones.”
