Numerous area libraries, including those in Sheboygan, were recently awarded a big surprise.
The Mead Public Library has shared that they were gifted $10,000 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
This donation comes in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
Carnegie Libraries are a piece of American history, as between 1886 and 1917, Andrew Carnegie funded the construction of over 1,600 libraries across the country.
Currently, approximately 1,280 remain intact, including the Mead.
Each of these libraries that remain was also awarded with their very own $10,000 gift to celebrate the 250th anniversary.
The Cities of Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Plymouth, Kaukauna, Fond du Lac, Neenah, and Green Bay were also recipients of this roughly $12 million in funding from the Carnegie Corporation.
An interactive map of all Carnegie Libraries in Wisconsin and the U.S., along with more on the grant funding, can be found at carnegie-libraries.carnegie.org.
