The City of Manitowoc could be considering consolidation.
Mayor Justin Nickels stated on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week that one of his priorities is looking at consolidating some city buildings in this year’s 2026 budget memo.
He says many city-owned buildings need repairs, including the city hall, which is over 20 years old.
“There’s just some maintenance that needs to happen to buildings when they hit that age,” he explained. “But we have buildings that are 100 years old.”
Nickels explains during his budget presentation that he’s proposing a study of the fire stations and their configuration.
That might include reconfiguring the fire stations.
The mayor described, “Whether we need four, whether we can consolidate down to three, which would save on equipment but also make sure that every station is fully staffed.”
Location will play a role in the possible plans because some of the fire stations are across the river.
Nickels will give his presentation of his proposed 2026 city budget during a special meeting tomorrow (November 4th).
The Manitowoc Finance Committee could make some changes before it’s approved in December.
