The City of Manitowoc wants to do a little more cleanup in some regions of the former mall site before continuing development.
The Common Council last week approved requesting to apply for Brownfield Grants, which would be used to help clean up any contamination.
The first one would be for up to $2 million in the River Point District as the city continues to redevelop the area, which used to be known as the CN Peninsula.
The land was purchased by the city in 2019 and has been successful in developing the River Point Apartments.
The other Brownfield grant will be for continued work to clean up the former Mid-Cities and Lakeshore mall properties, up to $500,000.
Manitowoc purchased the property in 2024, then tore down the buildings and leveled the area.
Tycore Built Inc., based in Green Bay, is expected to turn the area into housing, apartments, and possible future business development.
Stantec Consulting, based in Mequon, will help the city apply for the grants.
