A man who helped work for 10 years to build the memorial at Red Arrow Park in Manitowoc says he’s looking for accountability after a portion of it was ruined by vandalism.
Retired Command Sergeant Major of the 32nd Red Arrow Division, Ed Hanson, tells Seehafernews.com that he was walking through the park yesterday morning (October 7th) after a Rotary meeting and found broken red bricks that were pulled from a memorial area with flags that honor the U.S. Military.
He says the bricks were thrown around the area and near a sign dedicated to the 32nd Red Arrow Division.
“It looks like they were trying to break the concrete, but they broke the bricks instead,” he explained. “And they had to really slam them because those red bricks are very difficult to break.”
There were also some plastic flowers taken from the Steber family, who honored one of their members in WWII.
He called the whole thing disappointing.
“That someone would come to a park with a memorial to men and women who serve this country, gave them the right to, not come here and smash things, but to come to the park and enjoy themselves,” he told SeehaferNews.com.
Manitowoc Police Crime Prevention Sergeant Paul Krock says the department got a call yesterday (October 7th) in the morning after the vandalism was found.
An officer came down and documented the damage, which seems to be about $100 worth.
“Anybody with information regarding the vandalism is encouraged to call either the police department or Crime Stoppers,” SGT Krock noted. “Or use the (Crimestoppers) P3 App and you would be eligible for a reward.”
The phone number for Manitowoc Police is 920-686-6551.
Hanson reexplained that he decided to take on the project of making Red Arrow Park about the Red Arrow Division after seeing limited reminders in the park before. T
he Friends of Red Arrow Park had added bricks with flags as well as two new statues, a black and red stone, and other memorials in the park.
He told the council last month that the mission is complete, meaning they’ve done all the work they wanted to do at the park.
There are currently no suspects, but Sgt. Krock says there will be police action if they are caught, meaning a ticket or maybe charges.
