The North Shore Health Department has confirmed Milwaukee County’s first human case of West Nile virus this year.
The case was identified in the northern part of the county, health officials announced Tuesday.
The mosquito-borne virus does not spread from person to person.
While many infected individuals experience no symptoms, those who are older or have weakened immune systems are at greater risk for serious illness.
Authorities are urging residents to use insect repellent, eliminate standing water, and take protective measures until colder weather eliminates mosquito activity.
