With the bow and arrow deer hunting now underway, Manitowoc Police are reminding residents about being able to do it within the city limits.
Lieutenant Mark Schroeder was on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week and said about 100 hunters apply for a permit every year.
It was originally established to reduce car accidents, but the state legislature later made it mandatory by law to allow urban deer hunting.
Schroeder explained that residents are required to fill out a permit starting in August before they can hunt on either some city-owned land or their own.
“There’s a chunk off of Reed Avenue and a chunk off of Michigan Avenue that’s owned by the city that’s open to bow hunting,” he explained. “And then there’s private land. So, a person has a friend with a couple of acres, they come in, they fill out the permit for that.”
But before bow hunting on private land is allowed, police are looking for two things.
“One is safety, which is number one,” he stated. “And then two is deer recoverability. So making sure that after you shoot and animal that you are able to get that animal.”
Schroeder reminds hunters that they have to do their hunting from an elevated position, meaning in a deer stand.
Hunters who aren’t residents are also allowed to hunt on certain land if it’s approved by the department.
About 517 deer have been taken by hunters since the program started.
