After years of review, a nuclear power plant in Manitowoc County will be permitted to continue operation for an additional 25 years.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy stated that Units 1 and 2 at the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant in Two Rivers have received their subsequent license renewal from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which allows the plant to continue producing reliable power in Wisconsin through 2050 and 2053 for each reactor.
The NRC states that they received the subsequent license renewal for Point Beach in November 2020, before holding numerous meetings about the plant in 2021 and 2022.
Staff also prepared a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) as part of its review of the plant.
NextEra Energy Resources President Brian Bolster says of the renewal, “We are proud that Point Beach will remain an integral part of Wisconsin’s energy future and a vital contributor to the state and local economies.”
Point Beach Nuclear Powerplant generates enough electricity to power nearly a million homes and businesses, and supplies 14% of Wisconsin’s total electricity.
They also provide 400 jobs to the community and are involved in community engagement through local schools, youth sports, and government initiatives.
