A yearly motorsports tradition will be coming back to Elkhart Lake next weekend.
The 61st running of the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) National Championship Runoffs will be held at Road America from October 3rd through the 5th.
The event will bring nearly 400 competitors to “America’s National Park of Speed” to participate in what is considered the world’s largest amateur road-racing event.
Next weekend’s festivities at the four-mile track will have a total of 23 national championships on the line in classes ranging from American muscle such as Mustangs and Corvettes to open-wheel formula cars.
The National Championship Runoffs are seen as a major stepping stone for competitors looking to make the jump from amateur status to full-fledged professional racers.
Notable past champions at the event who took that same leap include Paul Newman, Roger Penske, and Skip Barber, to name a few.
Off the track, spectators will also get a chance to view several facility upgrades at Road America that have been implemented to improve accessibility, safety, and viewing experiences.
These include a multi-use bridge over the track’s front straightaway, expanded viewing at turn 12, and artistic carvings throughout the grounds.
