About 20,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into Lake Michigan.
The spill is said to have occurred last Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
The leak occurred during a treatment process at the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility and entered the lake through a storm drain.
The spill follows a major flooding event in the region last month.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
