Manitowoc County has appointed its next treasurer, the second in as many months.
The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the appointment of Mellisa McCulley to fill the job after Jim Brey passed away unexpectedly back in August.
McCulley told the board that she has some big shoes to fill, but she’s ready for her next adventure.
After serving as deputy treasurer for four years, she says she knows what the job holds.
“There’s a lot of challenging tasks and it’s multi-faceted, it’s just moving,” she explained. “People can walk by, and you think, ‘Oh, they’re just sitting in there, they’re really not doing anything.’ But there is always something going on.”
Over the last two months, McCulley has been working in both the treasurer’s and human services departments, ensuring the treasurer’s office remains operational.
Former County Treasurer Amy Kocian and Town of Two Rivers Treasurer Bonnie Timm have also been working in the department.
She finished by saying she is looking forward to serving Manitowoc County.
Jim Brey was also honored at the beginning of the meeting, and his wife, Jodi, was given a proclamation in his honor.
She told the board that Jim had a hard time resigning from his district seat since he loved what he did.
Jodi also reminded the board of what she reminded him of every time.
“When you come here, drop your ego,” she stated. “You’re here not to grandiose yourself or your political believes, you are here to serve the citizens of Manitowoc.”
She then thanked the board, expressing her appreciation for the resolution.
McCulley will fill the rest of the county treasurer’s term until 2029.
Kocian resigned from the job earlier this year.
