A teacher in the School District of Mishicot is one of only twelve teachers selected for a project involving a former U.S. President.
Social Studies Teacher Jen Wachowski is participating in the University of Virginia’s Center for Digital Editing and the Paper of Martin Van Buren Project.
The opportunity enables Wachowski to collaborate with other educators in co-developing lessons that explore critical mid-19th-century themes still relevant today.
She also gets unique access to do a deep dive into the life of President Van Buren while creating a meaningful, classroom-ready lesson for students across the country.
The University of Virginia explains that by making the papers accessible, it will provide new insights into the founding of the Democratic Party, the evolution of formal politics between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and the changes in political culture that occurred during Van Buren’s life.
