The United Way of Manitowoc County is fundraising for a children’s book program.
The DollyWalk Fundraiser takes place today from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the United Way offices off Wald Blvd to raise money for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Executive Director Ashley Bender said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the Women United affinity group organized the walk for the library, which is a program that provides children aged 0-5 with a free book each month.
Bender calls the program a great way to get children literate at an early age.
“It helps us not only to navigate everyday things such as reading recipes and reading signs if you’re driving or trying to navigate,” she explained. “But also understanding everyday moments.”
The DollyWalk will start at the Manitowoc Yacht Club and up the Mariners Trail to the Dairy Queen.
Then walkers will turn around and come back for a 2-mile walk.
There will also be a photo opportunity with a Dolly Parton cutout and a chance to buy some Dolly Wood, which are bundles of wood for sale.
The walk also includes a storyboard of “The Little Engine That Could” while kids get a coupon for a kid’s ice cream cone.
Pets are also allowed on the walk.
