There will be another opportunity for Manitowoc County farmers to participate in a corn silage dry-down event in the next few days.
This event, hosted by UW Extension Manitowoc County, will take place in Kiel on Tuesday, September 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
These dry-down events allow farmers to check their corn moisture levels after a strong growing season throughout the county and Wisconsin as a whole.
Angie Ulness, Manitowoc County’s Agricultural Educator through the UW Extension, tells SeehaferNews.com that those participating should “bring four to five stalks of corn at chopper height and make sure you cut that the morning of the dry down event. Select the stalks representative of the inside of the field to avoid field borders and headlands, and all samples should be at least the dense stage.”
Ulness also shared what those participating can expect on the day of the dry down.
“We’re going to chop them up in choppers, and John Deere is coming with a table-top dryer. We’ll get your moisture that day,” she said. “There will be lunch provided.”
This will also serve as the second of two Manitowoc County corn silage dry downs, with the first taking place earlier this week. Anyone who participated in the first event can find results from the first dry down by visiting manitowoc.extension.wisc.edu.
