Duck hunters are being asked not to consume meat if they are hunting around the Bay of Green Bay.
The Wisconsin DNR announced a new consumption advisory for mallards and wood ducks harvested on Green Bay due to PFAS contamination.
The advisories pertain to two distinct areas of the bay.
Hunters are asked not to eat any mallards harvested on Lower Green Bay from Longtail Point across to Point au Sable and south to the mouth of the Fox River.
Those taking ducks from the bay in the City of Marinette across to Sturgeon Bay and south to Longtail Point should only eat one mallard duck a month, and wood ducks only once a week.
The DNR states that waterfowl data were collected in Green Bay in 2022 to evaluate an existing chemical consumption advisory in lower Green Bay.
PFAS were found in the breast meat of ducks in the areas, but ducks in the southern portion of the bay had higher concentrations than those in the northern portion.
