The USS Cobia will not be leaving Manitowoc tomorrow (September 4th) as planned.
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum explains to Seehafernews.com that due to wind speeds of up to 23 miles per hour on Lake Michigan, it has made it unsafe to take the submarine to Sturgeon Bay for drydocking.
The museum would have made Friday (September 5th) the backup date, but the water isn’t expected to be calm by then.
That means the WWII submarine will have to wait before being drydocked at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.
The museum will give a new date for when two tugboats will pull the Cobia up Lake Michigan in the future.
In the meantime, they thank the public for their patience as they await the winds to subside.
When the water conditions permit, the submarine will be pulled out of the water for cleaning, inspection, and repair as needed.
The museum raised $1.5 million for drydocking, with some funding coming from the Wisconsin biennial budget.
