The historic submarine at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is leaving Manitowoc this week.
The USS Cobia will be pulled by two tugboats beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday (September 4th) up Lake Michigan as it goes to be dry-docked at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay.
The dry-docking process involves cleaning and repairing areas, particularly on the bottom of the sub, which has accumulated zebra and quagga mussels due to its prolonged immersion in the water.
The last time the Cobia was dry-docked was back in 1996.
After the submarine is cleaned and repaired, it will be returned to the museum in approximately six weeks.
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum raised $1.5 million to move and drydock the submarine.
Some money comes from a federal grant, while some also comes from a donation from the state through the 2025-2027 state budget.
