While Wisconsinites enjoy Labor Day weekend, the Department of Natural Resources is kicking off a campaign to keep the state’s trails safe.
The DNR’s Think Smart Before You Start safety campaign will have an increased number of conservation wardens and county rec deputies patrolling ATV/UTV trails across the state, promoting safe practices and enforcing the law.
In particular, they will be monitoring for risky behaviors and providing safety tips for those choosing to ride over the holiday weekend.
As previously reported by SeehaferNews.com, this safety campaign comes as ATV and UTV crash fatalities continue to rise.
We last reported on the death toll on Wisconsin trails on August 18th, and in that time, two more people have lost their lives.
In both cases, seatbelts were not being worn, while one has been confirmed to have involved alcohol consumption.
With this in mind, the DNR will be watching closely for OWIs, speed violations, careless operation, and helmet and seatbelt use.
When discussing the Think Smart Before You Start campaign, Lt. Jake Holsclaw with the DNR said, “At the end of the day, our goal is to prevent fatalities and make our trail and route systems safer for all users.”
