The Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah Fire Departments were able to help residents of an apartment complex escape because of a gas leak.
Both fire departments were called yesterday (August 18th) just before 4:00 p.m. to Point Elkhart Drive on a report of a natural gas leak.
Assistant Fire Chief Kieth Fischer says Wisconsin Public Service was already on scene and confirmed that natural gas was leaking, so fire crews geared up to start evacuations.
Emergency crews were able to gain access to nearby residences to check internal gas levels and secure the buildings to start ventilation.
Elevated gas levels were found inside one unit, resulting in monitoring of the situation and venting operations until gas levels were diminished and the area was deemed safe to return.
Lightning is presumed to have caused the gas line leak, and no residents became sick because of it.
One firefighter developed a minor sickness and was treated by EMS and Orange Cross ambulance.
