With the Manitowoc County Fair getting underway tomorrow (August 19th), the Manitowoc County Emergency Services Department is reminding residents to be safe.
Director Rhonda Green said on the WCUB Breakfast Club that while everyone should have fun at the fair, it’s important to plan ahead.
Whether that means finding a safe ride home or bringing items to keep you cool and safe from the sun.
One thing that helps is loose-fitting clothing.
“People like to wear their tank tops and their t-shirts and stuff, and they’re fine,” she noted. “Wear lots of sunscreen if you’re going to do that. But loose-fitting clothes actually keep you cooler. And I can say this from experience, being a farm kid.”
Speaking of kids, Green recommends always keeping an eye on your little ones if they go to a fair because they can be with a parent one minute and gone the next.
It’s recommended to take a picture of your child before you go, and make sure you have a meeting point in case one gets lost.
“Teach your children that if they do get separated from you as a parent or a guardian, show them where the first aid station is, where the sheriff’s office is where the police are,” she explained. “Have them go directly there and they will help reunite the parents with the children or the guardians with the children.”
Regarding the rides, it’s important to know if you meet the height and weight requirements before getting on for safety.
Green also asks people at the fair to be aware of their surroundings, especially if they see irregular behavior.
Report anything out of the ordinary to a fair employee or to a sheriff’s deputy on scene.
The Manitowoc County Emergency Services Department will have its vehicle on display at the fair, located near the First Aid tent.
