The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is again stressing safety on state trails following multiple deaths in less than a month.
As of today (August 18th), there have been 25 deaths in ATV or UTV crashes in 2025 in Wisconsin, two of which have occurred in the past few weeks.
With the rising number of fatalities, the DNR is urging riders and passengers alike to come equipped with all safety gear and training, as they believe many of these deaths could have been avoided.
Over half of the fatal crashes in 2025 have been rollovers, and virtually none of the individuals involved in those rollovers were wearing a seatbelt or a helmet.
When addressing the recent uptick, Lt. Jake Holsclaw, Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator, said, “UTVs and ATVs are not designed like cars. When people treat them like they are, speeding on pavement or taking sharp turns, they roll over. And if you’re not buckled in or wearing a helmet, the consequences can be deadly.”
When operating a UTV or ATV, it is imperative to never consume drugs or alcohol, follow posted speed limits, and let someone know that you are going riding.
Following these tips, along with wearing a seatbelt and helmet, could be the difference between life and death.
