The FAA is clearing the skies of Sheboygan during the P1 Powerboat races this weekend.
The Sheboygan Police Department has shared that, for public safety, a no fly zone has been implemented over parts of the city for special security reasons.
The no-fly zone encompasses a two-nautical-mile radius spanning from the Sheboygan Harbor and is limited to only unmanned aircraft.
This includes drones that are flying between ground level and 1,000 feet above the ground; however, drones that obtained a waiver from the FAA will be exempt.
The no fly zone was put into effect this morning at 9:00 a.m. and will come to an end at 5:30 p.m.
It will again be active during the same time period, both tomorrow (August 9th) and Sunday (August 10th), while the boat races are running.
During the races, a rescue helicopter is required to be airborne over the racecourse, and drones in the air can pose a risk, as in years past, drones have delayed races and posed safety risks to flight crews, racers, and the public.
In the Sheboygan Police Department’s statement, they said, “Drone operators that fail to comply with the TFR (Temporary Flight Restrictions) may be subject to seizure of their drone and referral to federal authorities.”
