Changes may be coming to Ontario Avenue in Sheboygan amid safety concerns.
Sheboygan’s Public Works Committee is gearing up to discuss implementing a no-parking zone of roughly 400 feet on the north side of Ontario Avenue near 14th Street.
Currently, the street allows for on-street parking in both directions while also accommodating two-way vehicular traffic, but it is just 32 feet wide.
Normally, a minimum of 40 feet is required to fit the amenities Ontario Avenue provides.
Sheboygan’s Director of Public Works, Travis Peterson, says, “Allowing parking on both sides of a 32-foot-wide street compromises safety by creating narrow lanes, forcing drivers to swerve into oncoming traffic. To improve safety and maintain efficient two-way traffic flow, the proposed no parking zone will provide adequate clearance for vehicles, reducing the risk of conflict.”
If this general ordinance is passed, no impacts regarding funding will occur, and the Department of Public Works would be responsible for the removal and installation of all signage.
If the ordinance is agreed upon by the Public Works Committee, it will go before the Common Council to receive full approval.
