The City of Sheboygan has received funding to aid residents in replacing lead service lines.
At this week’s Common Council meeting, the group agreed in a unanimous vote to execute the Department of Natural Resources Principal Forgiveness Financial Assistance Agreement, worth up to $3 million.
This agreement comes as part of the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program and will be distributed as loans to Sheboygan residents who wish to replace any lead pipes that may exist between the publicly owned water main and a resident’s water meter.
Through this loan from the DNR, the City aims to replace approximately 350 lead service lines that fall within the east-central portion of Sheboygan, specifically census tracts 5, 8, and 114.
In addition to this funding from the DNR, the City agreed to issue over $200,000 in Taxable General Obligation Lead Service Line Replacement Promissory Notes as well.
This money comes from a different program of state funding, but will be used to fund the same project of removing lead service lines that lead to a business or residential water meter.
