The death rate in Manitowoc County was down last year.
Manitowoc County Coroner Curt Green explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that there were 740 deaths last year, which is down from 780 in 2023.
He also stated that the county’s numbers were down in categories, including accidental deaths.
“I think people are getting wiser,” he explained. “Don’t drink and drive, although it certainly happens. Wearing seat belts, I think, is very helpful. Motorcycle helmets, things like that.”
Unfortunately, there are some people who have taken their own lives in the county.
Green says he investigated 18 suicides, and half of those used some kind of weapon.
The coroner noted, “Statistics in Manitowoc County regarding suicide are just a touch higher than the statewide average.”
Nationwide, Green says alcohol related deaths with chronic alcoholism and acute alcohol poisoning are up 35%, while it’s much higher in Manitowoc County at close to 50%.
This year, there have been 23 alcohol related deaths that the coroner’s office has investigated.
Green says the deaths have also produced very high blood alcohol levels, with some averaging around .3 and .4 marks.
