A statewide program offering nutritional education and other resources for low-income families is coming to an end.
FoodWIse Coordinator for Door, Kewaunee, and Manitowoc County, Laura Apfelbeck, tells SeehaferNews.com that FoodWIse will end on September 30th of this year due to federal funding cuts through the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
That will affect programs at the Southfield Townhouses and the Manitowoc Boys and Girls Club, which will have nutrition educators stay through the summer.
However, collaborative garden projects at First Presbyterian, Grow It Forward, Horizons, and the Hmong Elders Garden at the Manitowoc Senior Center will continue through the support of partners.
Apfelbeck says the gleaning project at the Manitowoc Farmers Market is in good hands with Grow It Forward and the market manager.
According to FoodWIse, they reach over 133,000 people with nutritional education and community-based strategies to support healthy eating and active lifestyles.
The group will seek an alternative funding source to leverage infrastructure, expertise, and other resources.
