A Green Bay landlord is being sued by the United States Justice Department.
U.S. Attorney Richard Frohling announced that last week, they filed a civil complaint against David Jones and D Jones Properties LLC, alleging that he and his business discriminated on the basis of sex in violation of the Fair Housing Act (FHA).
The complaint explains that Jones, who owns multiple rental properties in the Green Bay area, engaged in “severe, pervasive, and unwelcome sexual harassment of a female tenant by, among other things, making unwelcome sexual comments, grabbing the tenant without her consent, entering the tenant’s home without her permission, and taking adverse housing-related actions against the tenant when she asserted her rights under the FHA.”
This lawsuit seeks monetary damages for the female victims harmed by the alleged harassment as well as a court order barring future discrimination.
When discussing the effects such a case can have, Attorney Frohling said, “No one should be forced to choose between safe housing and their right to live free from sexual harassment.”
Per the FHA, discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and familial status is illegal.
