The Wisconsin DNR has released numbers after conducting a statewide waterfowl survey.
The survey indicated a stable population and habitat conditions for migratory birds in the Badger State.
The state’s 2025 breeding population was 594,693 birds, representing a 7% increase from the 2024 estimate and 26.9% above the long-term average.
The mallard breeding population is 2% higher, at approximately 150,000 birds.
The wood duck population is down 1.8% from last year, as is the Canadian goose population, which is down 8% from 2024.
However, it remains higher than the long-term average.
The waterfowl survey has been conducted since 1973 and helps the DNR make informed management decisions regarding the population.
